Virtual Power Plants, or VPPs, represent a pool of households utilizing solar and battery technology to decentralise the supply of electricity during peak demand, or a disruption, pushing extra power stored in a battery back into the grid. Emerging technology will soon allow electric vehicles to be used for VPPs, with car’s batteries charging during the day by means of solar, then using bi-directional charging to send that power back into a household or the broader electricity network at night. “By aggregating thousands of individual home batteries, VPPs allow renewable energy to be injected into the grid with lightning speed to address local disruptions and keep the network stable,” an Australian Renewable Energy Agency spokesman said.
